When going to buy a real tree, tap it on the ground to make sure that it does not lose needles.
Buy a stand that holds at least a gallon of water.
When you bring it home, leave it standing up-right outside until you are ready to bring it in to decorate. Then cut at least 1 inch off of the trunk to help it absorb the water easier.
Do not place your tree near a floor heater, a fireplace or any other source of heat and also don't place it in high traffic areas where it could get knocked over. Secure it with wire to be sure it will not tip over.
The two key things to remember are that heat is the enemy, and moisture is the friend of your tree.
Only use CSA, ASA and/or UL-approved lights and do not link more than 3 strands of lights together. The miniature lights are the best since they have cool-burning bulbs. Check the wiring for shorts or other malfunctions. If ever unsure, throw it out. Better safe than sorry.
Do not use candles, not even on artificial trees.
If you have small children, try to keep any breakable ornaments towards the top because they will reach for the ones on the bottom.
